Grounding

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

When I think about grounding, a part of that concept is what most witches would recognize as daily practice: sitting at my altar, sending my roots deep into Mother Earth, breathing through those roots, achieving a deep sense of groundedness to carry me through my day. And another part of what I think of as grounding looks more like living a well-grounded existence: taking care of my physical body, living in a clean, organized space, managing my finances, arranging my personal situation so that I can live with integrity, getting where I’m supposed to get when I’m supposed to get there, doing what I say I’ll do, being able to remain grounded, rather than scattered. That kind of integrity is important for a witch because, if your word and intention aren’t any good, as someone once said, in this world, how can you expect them to count for much between the worlds?

I’m often surprised how many people who would never think of disregarding the laws of magic are willing to disregard the other laws of reality. You’re disregarding the laws of reality if you live beyond your means, ignore your health, fail to manage the details of your days with at least some measure of grace and courage. I’m not talking about obsessive control; in fact, I’m talking about the opposite. I’m talking about mastery over enough of your situation that you’re able to achieve what you want to achieve, rather than spending most of your time reacting to forces beyond your control.

I think it was Thomas Merton who explained that the highly-disciplined day of many religious monastics is actually a springboard to the freedom needed to achieve serious spiritual progress. Few of us will ever engage in that much structure, but I think the point’s still well-taken: it’s difficult to do serious magic, to grow spiritually, to help to turn the Wheel if you arrive harried and late for the ritual (do not get me started on “Pagan Standard Time” — ha ha — rude is rude, and those of us who have been wasting our time sitting around waiting for you aren’t amused; just saying), if you’re worried about being evicted, if you didn’t get enough sleep the night before because you stayed up way too late (again) watching Buffy or playing Wii.

In D.C. Pagan circles, I frequently bump into a lovely young woman who clearly really wants to live a magical life and grow as a witch. She signs up for classes that she then regularly misses because (pick one) she’s sick with another bad cold, she’s out of money for gas for her car and can’t get to class, her dysfunctional SO needs her to bail him out, she just lost another entry-level job because she doesn’t show up there very regularly, either, she just got evicted because she had 15 cats living in her apartment even though she signed a lease agreeing not to have more than one, . . . . She volunteers for responsibilities that she then regularly has to dump, at the last minute, onto someone else because she . . . you know. Anyone who’s been active in the Pagan community knows people from the same mold. It’s not really surprising, when you think about it; people are attracted to ecstatic, magical religions for a reason. But you want to just pull a witch like this aside and suggest that what she really needs to do — in order to live as a witch, in order to do magic — is to get her “mundane” life in order before she takes another class, buys another Tarot deck, heads to another festival.

Engaging in the daily practice of grounding, the first kind of grounding that I described above, provides a really good example of what I’m talking about. It, or some intentional practice quite like it, is really the foundation of any magical practice. But it’s almost impossible to engage in that practice if you haven’t set aside a space and time to do it, if you can’t find your altar for all the clutter, if you oversleep, again, and have to charge out of the house in a frantic dash in order to catch the last bus, etc. What it takes varies for each of us, and one witch’s well-lived life might look like chaos to another witch. A good test is integrity: are you able to do what you say you’ll do, are you able to meet your “mundane” responsibilities, or do you go through your days caught up in a whirlwind that blows you here and there?

No, you don’t have to be a black belt martial artist who eats only wheatgrass and tofu. But you have to take care of the physical body that is your vessel for magic on this planet. No, you don’t have to have a high-powered job and make a million dollars a year. But you have to live within your means. No, you don’t have to live in a palace, or a magical woodland cottage, or a temple by the sea. But you have to live in a safe-enough, clean-enough, organized-enough, comfortable place to which you can retreat and from which you can go forth and do what you want to do in the world. And, no, you don’t have to devote yourself to only one activity, but you can’t be so over-committed that you never really “do” anything deeply enough for it to change you.

If you don’t regularly do this sort of work as Samhein approaches, now, at the end of the secular year, is as good a time as any to take a grounding inventory. What areas of your life are well-grounded? How’d you do that? What areas of your life could stand to be placed upon more solid ground? How will you make that happen?

Blessing Jar

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

Sweep your main living area, entryway, or porch, to sweep out the old and allow the new to enter. Smudge around the room using a sweetgrass or sage smudging bundle and feather. Say prayers of your own choosing, in each of the four directions, east, west, north and south:

East represents “illuminocity”, giving individuals the ability to see all that is around them from a spiritual perspective.
West represents the inner heart and soul.
North represents knowledge, wisdom and purification of the heart, mind and soul. South represents the physical self.

Say a prayer of thanksgiving, and ask your spirit guides for safety, security and direction for the coming year.

Make a blessing jar…
Into a vase, jar or bottle (which symbolizes protection) put a small bag of soil (for abundance), a coin (for prosperity), a fabric bag of salt (for purification), a crystal (for vision), an arrowhead (for guidance), a tiny fabric bag of herbs (for grounding), a left over candle (for focus), a cross (for balance), a feather (for freedom), a clipping of hair from each family member (for unity), an old key (for opportunity), a small mirror (for truth), a piece of red paper (for memory), a small fabric bag of raw rice (for fertility), a ring (for love), a runestone (for communication), a shell (for choices), a small fabric bag of loose tea (for awareness), a small paper folded fan (for healing), a rubber band (for flexibility), a letter that contains this list and what you hope to accomplish this year, sealed inside an envelope (for happiness)

You need not have everything on this list, select what is important to you.

Seal the jar with the lid, or cover the bottle or vase with a piece of fabric and a rubberband or string. Place your blessing jar either just inside or outside your front door until next New Years Eve…

Feel free to share this ritual – the more blessing jars, smudging and rituals performed around the world the stronger the positive energy is for all…

2009 Mercury Retrograde

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

Mercury, the messenger of the gods Mercury Retrograde
Mercury retrograde in Aquarius [Jan 11 – Feb 1, 2009]

At 16:45 UT (Universal Time), on Sunday, January 11th, 2009, Mercury the cosmic trickster turns retrograde in Aquarius, the sign of the Water-Bearer, sending communications, travel, appointments, mail and the www into a general snarlup! Since this is the day of the potent Full Moon in Cancer, people’s emotions will be on high alert! The retro period begins a few days before the actual turning point (as Mercury slows) and lasts for three weeks or so, until February 1, when the Winged Messenger
reaches his direct station. At this time he halts and begins his return to direct motion through the zodiac.

Everything finally straightens out on February 14, as he passes the point where he first turned retrograde. Mercury normally turns retrograde three times a year, but this year he turns tail four times, which is unusual. The effects of each period differ, according to the sign in which it happens (see box for Retrograde Periods in 2009).

A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. According to modern science, this traditional concept arises in the illusory planetary motion created by the orbital rotation of the earth with relation to other planets in our solar system. Planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way due to this cosmic shadow-play.

Retrograde periods, although often problematic for us earthlings, are not particularly uncommon. Each planet retrogrades, except the Sun and Moon. Although a powerful astrological influence, Mercury is quite a small planet that travels at a relatively fast speed through the zodiac. Despite being the closest planet in our solar system to the Sun, it is not always in the same sign as the Sun. This time, Mercury turns retrograde in Aquarius (original; unorthodox), while the Sun is in Capricorn (ambition; loyalty), but heads back into Capricorn just after the Sun strides into Aquarius

As a rule, retrograde planets presage a period of seemingly inevitable or fated events that relate to their sphere of influence. They present us with a series of events over which we seem to have little or no conscious control, relating especially to the sign in which the retrogradation occurs. For example, Mercury retrograde in Aquarius (original; unorthodox) presents quite different sets of circumstances from those generated when it retrogrades into Capricorn (ambition; loyalty).

A retrograde period is best seen as a cycle, beginning when the planet begins to slow to a halt before travelling backwards through the zodiac and ending when the planet returns to the point where it first paused. However, during the cycle, the planet’s energy is most powerful (and more likely to generate critical events of universal importance) when the planet makes a station: appearing motionless in the sky.

These stationary periods occur near the beginning of the cycle (when the planet first halts as it prepares to move backwards) and midway through the cycle when the retrograde planet slows to a stop before moving forward again. The “direct station” (when the planet halts before moving forward again) is the most powerful and can be used for maximum benefit.

Many astrologers consider that the “Mercury Shadow” begins some three weeks before the actual retro station (when Mercury passes the point of direct station for the first time). This has some justification, but I am more inclined to think that the really noticeable peculiarities begin when Mercury slows significantly, a few days before the retro station. This period of “Mercury Shadow” extends to the Return date, some three weeks after the direct station. Bear this in mind, because experience shows that the effects of the retro period are still marked during the “shadow” phase. Some of the most characteristic annoyances often occur just after Mercury makes the direct station, while he is crawling forward before picking up speed.
Go to Top What does Mercury affect?

In general, Mercury rules thinking and perception, processing and disseminating information and all means of communication, commerce, education and transportation. By extension, Mercury rules people who work in these areas, especially people who work with their minds or their wits: writers and orators, commentators and critics, gossips and spin doctors, teachers, travellers, tricksters and thieves.

Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade; glitches and breakdowns with phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains. And all of these problems usually arise because some crucial piece of information, or component, has gone astray or awry.

It is therefore not wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is very likely that these decisions will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual, as the critical faculties are dimmed. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!
Go to Top The Key Issue

The key issue here is one of focus. Mercury’s retro phase tends to bring unforeseen changes and blockages, but the aggravation and frustration that many of us experience during these periods is often due to our own inability to roll with the punches. Is this due to our ego-fixation? Mercury sets out to restructure our thinking processes and for many of us this is painful and frustrating. Moreover, these experiences reveal flaws in our internal organisation as well as our external planning, which can make us feel foolish and inadequate.

Mercury retrograde, like any cosmic aspect, affects people differently, depending on where it hits their personal charts. Some people actually prosper under a retro Mercury, especially if Mercury is retrograde but otherwise well-aspected in their birth charts. It is also a time when matters begun under a previous retro period will come to fruition, or completion as the case may be. Firm decisions that have been previously made when Mercury is travelling normally through the zodiac may be implemented or finalised while Mercury is retrograde without too much worry, for experience shows that this can be done without undue problems arising.
Go to Top Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius
Aquarius, the Water-Bearer

When Mercury is retrograde, everyone’s thinking is more introspective and we tend to think about issues and concerns which relate to the sign involved. With Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, people with this sign prominent in their charts will be especially prone to such introspection. There is little choice but to reconsider our personal views and opinions about life. We receive, however, an opportunity to gain insight into our own ego. Since Barack Obama’s inauguration to the US Presidency occurs under this retro phase, just as Mercury and Sun conjoin in the first degree of Aquarius and just after Jupiter enters Aquarius for the first time in twelve years, it will no doubt present a number of conflicting issues for him, particularly with regard to the communication of his intentions. Obama is a Leo (the opposite sign to Aquarius), with Jupiter rising in Aquarius in the first degree – the degree of The Plundering Falcon…

Mercury retro in Aquarius generates an undue focus on originality and independence, love of intellectual freedom and the inclination to repudiate social conventions. Idealistic concepts however, will be under pressure during this Fixed Sign phase, as people will be inclined to be very stubborn and opinionated, while at the same time attempting to pressure others into sharing their attitudes. Unusual or unorthodox ideas will have difficulty melding with traditional positions, as people with new ideas will be unlikely to consider the feelings and opinions of the so-called “old wave”, who will vigorously resist proposed changes. The Full Moon in Cancer occurs on January 11th, just hours before Mercury turns retrograde. This is a very emotional Full Moon, with much potential for conflict (head versus heart; family versus career etc) and breaks in communication (Mercury being stationary prior to turning). This position can indicate nerve-related ailments and muscle cramping.

Mercury remains in Aquarius until January 21st, when he rolls back to Capricorn, creating havoc with political and administrative concerns, government
, career and public positions, along with the desire to rise in life! He returns to Aquarius on February 14th, but read on for more on Mercury’s stay in Capricorn.
Go to Top Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn
Capricorn, the Sea-Goat

At 05:37 hrs UT on January 21, Mercury slips back into Capricorn, the sign of the Sea-Goat. Mercury retro in Capricorn suggests trouble through trying to turn knowledge and ideas to some practical advantage, and disruptions or communication breakdown in organisations, businesses and administration
. People’s imagination tends to be restricted to pragmatic and material considerations, with too much trumpeting of traditional ideas, or those that do not conflict with or threaten their own. People suffer from a lack of humour, as they try to push through their own agendas and attempt to gain status by driving the right car and generally scoring points.

Mercury turns direct again at 27° 45′ Capricorn on February 1, returning to Aquarius on February 14th.

All areas of communication are affected, especially in matters related to the clubs and associations, friendships, the achievement of personal goals, career finances, administrative concepts, and new ideas in general. This period brings travel snafus and missed appointments of all kinds. Documents can go astray. Be sure to carry a diary and refer to it often.

New years Chant

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

As the change of the old to new the betwixt of the in between of two years we experiences the magic of the new lessons and possibilities brought with the coming of a New Wheel to experience this cycle of the coming year with new eyes and hopes of dreams to come into fruition.

For this I have used a chant I found in my spell a day book by llewellyn in 2003 written by Abby Willowroot. I’ve found it to help me focus and look forward to with open arms and heart to the New Year.

This is a spell for letting go of things which hold you back as we move into the new year. You can use white candles to symbolise this passing:

Blessed year passing
away,
May your joys with me
stay.

Make me lucky, make me
wise.
Magic blessings before
these eyes.

Magical time between
old and new,
Yesterday and tomorrow.
Lessons learned will be
due.
Pass away regret and
sorrow.

Magic passing stay with
me,
And I will hold you dear.
New Year’s Eve and
New Year’s Day,
Let the spirits of
possibility play.

Words that open doors
to secrets old and new
dear.
What I reap return to
me.

Tomorrow begins
another year.

Skills I have to grow
and blossom.
Talents I lack will come
to me.
May lessons learned stay
now with me,
With open eyes I am
free.

Grow powers in me and
vision true,
to clear the past and
grow anew.
None og the past will
cling to me,
I am happy.

So mote it be.
-*-

I hope this helps you as much as it does for me and may you all have a wonderful New Year’s Eve and Day. Merry wishes may they stay!

Blessed Be.

January Love Spell

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

You will need a red candle, a white candle, two candle holders, a ballpoint pen, vanilla scented oil, and a piece of rose quartz.

Turn on some soft, romantic music, draw a magic circle, and call in your favorite love goddess or god. With the ballpoint pen, write the name of the deity and your initials on the red candle. Then draw a heart around what you’ve written. Write the deity’s name and your initials on the white candle, but encircle them with a sun symbol instead of a heart symbol. This symbolizes the linking of earthly and divine love. Next, cover both candles with a thin coating of the vanilla oil, and place them in their holders. Wipe the oil off your hands. Put the piece of rose quartz between the candles. Light the red candle. As you do, imagine its light as being divine love that ignites the fiery passion in your very soul. Now light the white candle, and see the this divine love igniting your love life even more.

Now, pick up and hold the rose quartz in your power hand (your right hand if you are right-handed and vice versa). Feel it warm up from the heat of your hand. Gaze deeply into the flames and say:

Flaming fires of divine love,

Brighten my love life every day,

Help me experience love and joy

In many splendorous and romantic ways.

Hold the stone in your hand while you gaze into the flames. Imagine the romantic and splendorous ways you can experience more love every day of the year. Thank deity and close the circle. Carry the rose quartz with you in your pocket or purse to encourage more love in your daily life.

New Year Poem

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

May you awaken to the mystery of being here and enter
the quiet immensity of your own presence.

May you have joy and peace in the temple of your own
senses.

May you receive great encouragement when new frontiers
beckon.

May you respond to the call of your gift
and find the courage to follow its path.

May the flame of anger free you from falsity.

May the warmth of your heart keep your presence a
flame and anxiety never linger about you.

May your outer dignity mirror an inner dignity of
soul.

May you take time to celebrate the quiet miracles
that seek no attention.

May you be consoled in the secret symmetry of your
being and may you experience each day as a sacred gift
woven around the heart of wonder.

Detication in the New year

Posted by: witchery on: January 9, 2009

While we celebrate the new year as Nov 1 according to the Celtic Year, I still observe the Roman New Year as so much psychic energy is created by the masses who recognize this as the time of new beginnings.

I think the Romans chose January 1st because it follows so soon after the Winter Solstice and instinctively people knew the winter was coming to an end. The shortest day of the year passes as the Mother Goddess gives birth to her Sun (son) when it’s first rays touched the altar stone at Stonehenge. It felt as though there was hope to get through the rest of the winter and a time to start over.

While the Sun is just a babe, the winter belongs to the Crone or Cailleach. Hers is the power of death, the dark, secrets, seeds, and all that is wild and unborn. Nothing is beyond her reach. The three moons that occur in this season (Jan-Mar) take us from Winter into Spring, but it’s the Esbats, the dark moons, that are for dedicating yourself to your magical universe. Use these new moons to carry out a dedication ritual, stretching it into all three months. Recognize what you have been and are choosing to be. What will you dedicate yourself to this year? To what will you give birth this spring?

The most powerful among us take responsibility for what we create and do so with intent. Be aware of what you create for it effects us all.

I have a TON of posts too. So if you read me on an RSS reader (i’m being really nice to myself right now making this assumption) I apologize. There are going to be a lot of posts dropped in soon!

The Crone: Wisdom

Posted by: witchery on: July 11, 2008

The Crone: Wisdom

The old hag at her cauldron is perhaps the most enduring image of the Wise Woman and a remnant of a time when women were the healers of their communities. They were shamans, witches, midwifes, medicine women, and priestesses of the Goddess.

The Crone is a symbol of inherent wisdom that comes from experience. She has lived through love, sorrow, hope, and fear, coming out of it all a wise and confident spirit. Through these experiences she has learned the secrets of life and death and of the mysteries beyond this world. She has tasted death itself and watched those she loved make the journey before her. It is through her mourning that she faces death, grows to understand it, and becomes the gatekeeper between worlds.

The wisdom of the Crone comes only after learning the lessons of non-judgment and compassion. Through these lessons the Crone becomes the balancing scales between light and dark and between life and death. She is selfless, yet she loves herself. She is kind, yet she knows when to be harsh. She is free, she is compassionate, and she is wise. Only the Crone can complete the journey to the Otherworld and birth the Child of Completion.

The Crone is full of power. Her body is no longer fertile, but her mind is sharp and able. She no longer bleeds, keeping her power within her and owning it without shame or fear.

She is often seen as a healer, working in tune with Nature to cure ailments and guide those ready to leave or enter this world. She is the elder priestess of the Goddess; the Grandmother whose words are few yet priceless in their wisdom.

In myth the Crone is often seen as something to be feared. She is a representation of death and its mysteries. Things that are unknown are always feared, thus we work to know the Crone; to understand her wisdom and beckon her to impart the mysteries upon us. We surrender our fear and ignorance to the Crone and let her strike these overpowering influences down as a stalk of wheat with her shining sickle.

As with all aspects of the Goddess the Crone is not only found within the aged. She is in all beings at all times. She can be present in men and women, young and old; though age may very likely come before her lessons are fully realized.

The Crone is a cleansing force that sweeps through the world carrying away those whose time to live is done to make room for new life. She is associated with the element of water and the direction of west – land of the dead. She is the necessary force of destruction like the force of a wave on the shore; ripping away the beach and returning it to the sea from which it came.

She is the reaper, the comforter, the mysterious old woman who possesses the knowledge of all worlds. The next time a thunderstorm passes overhead take a moment to listen to the voice of the Crone. Feel the tears of joy and mourning fall upon your head and take the first steps to understand her mysteries.

Affirmation of the Crone

Use this affirmation daily to seek the wisdom of the Crone within yourself.

Ancient Crone,
You are the source of eternal knowledge
That leads to the completion of the spirit.
Let my soul seek your lessons,
And strive to understand your mysteries.
I will not fear the darkness
For I know you wait for me within it.

A Journey with the Crone

Prepare yourself as you have for the other journeys. Light incense or play soft music if this is helpful to you.

You begin, as always, on that familiar path. Look up through the now thinning branches of the trees into the night sky. The waning moon hangs overhead, it’s sickle shape bright and surrounded by millions of stars.

It is hard to see anything along the path. Shadows take up much of the spaces where flowers once grew. If you look hard enough you may see a healing plant or two tucked in along the path. Take your time and explore a little. You are not afraid.

Animals of the night move in the forest around you. An owl can be heard in the distance asking her eternal question. She wants to know who you are. Can you tell her or are you unsure of yourself?

As you walk up to the gate you see that it is now covered with dying vines, dried up and withered. Leave the baggage of your mundane life on the ground and push it open to approach the cottage.

You can see smoke rippling out of the chimney and the windows are glowing with a welcoming light. Walk to the door and enter.

Bent over the hearth is an old woman wearing a dark cloak with the hood pulled up over her grey hair. When you enter she turns to you, pays you half a glance, and silently gestures for you to sit by the fire. She has been expecting you.

You watch her work in her cauldron, grabbing bundles of herbs from the mantle to add to her brew. After a moment she takes a seat beside you and pulls her hood down to expose her time weathered face.

She turns to you and in her hand is a cup of the brew she has been tending. She offers it to you and says:

“I am the grandmother of mysteries. You have come to this place seeking wisdom. Drink from this cup and learn all that you need to know at this time.”

You take the hot cup and drink deeply from it. What knowledge comes into your mind as the bittersweet liquid passes over your lips? Is anything foggy? Are there things that are not clear to you still?

Speak with the Crone for a time. Spend time with her and learn from her timeless experience.

When you are ready to leave embrace your grandmother and return to the gate. Take only what you need before returning down the path and allowing your consciousness to surface slowly.

Embracing the Crone Ritual

You will need a dark or silver colored bowl of water, your favorite incense, and a candle. Get everything prepared and find a quiet place to sit alone.

This ritual should be done as closely as possible to the last quarter—the waning moon.

Invite the Crone in your own words. You may choose to use a specific Crone Goddess if you like or simply call on the Crone aspect of the Great Goddess.

Now might be a good time to use the Crone meditation you read earlier. Either way, quiet your mind and ground yourself in whatever way works for you.

Recite the following words:

Ancient Crone, allow me to find wisdom within myself and to always remember that your lessons are within me waiting to be revealed. May I strive to understand all that is light and dark without fear.

The bowl of water represents a portal between this world and the Otherworld. When you are ready, relax the focus of your eyes and gaze into the surface of the water. Stare at it as long as you can allowing yourself to “daydream” into the water.

Make note of shapes, letters, images, etc. that you see on the surface of the water. Later you may want to do some research and soul searching to find out what these things mean.

When you are done scrying thank the Crone in your own words and drip some of the water over your hands and face. Pay special attention to the area of your third eye—on your forehead between your eyes.

The ritual is ended here. You may choose to go outside and gaze at the waning moon and be with the Crone.

Prayers and Chants of the Crone

I.
Ancient Crone,
Cleansing waters of wisdom,
I embrace you within myself,
And dance with you ‘round the well.
Let me be a seeker of knowledge,
And courageous in the face of darkness.
My heart sings your melody
And my spirit is forever whole.

II.
Cerridwyn of the Cauldron,
Timeless Grandmother,
Shape shifting Queen of mysteries,
Let your wisdom surround me and be within me.
Reap away my fear and ignorance.
Lady Crone, bless me with your gifts.

III.
Lady of Autumn,
Fading blossom of Samhain,
I am your heart’s drummer
And forever your student.

IV.
The Crone awakens within me.
Now and always I seek wisdom.
